I’m against ugly art. Home Sense and other big box stores sell ugly art. So does a certain vanity gallery in Niagara-on-the-Lake. Horrendous animal paintings – uggggllly. Ugly art is the lowest common denominator of what’s acceptable to hang in your home – it’s what everyone else has – a washed down beige version of what is popular, trendy and safe.
Why do we buy ugly art? It’s because we are not confident enough in our taste to buy good art. We don’t trust our instincts and choices enough to choose something outside the big box.
TV home shows are popular and prolific. Why? It’s because we want someone else to make the hard choices for us. Why? Because we aren’t taught design, colour, art appreciation and so we don’t think our tastes are adequate enough to make such a decision.
So we buy safe crap art from Home Sense.
Don’t do that. Don’t spend another minute looking at mass produced art. Don’t cater to the taste of the retailer. You’re better than that. Spend some time trusting your gut about what you like.
Then take your gut and your perfectly good taste to a place to buy art made by creative people instead of where factory made art is sold by talented retailers.
