Building self through art

by Danielle on December 6, 2009

“This is not about how to make things, it’s about creating people who are imaginative and creative, with hearts that are full and happy … who take opportunities to reach their goals.”, says Setsuko Morinoue in an article from a Hawaii newspaper.

The article is titled Building self through art and profiles a couple who a founded an arts and culture foundation in 1994. The article says they have developed and continue to teach art programs that double as character education.

Understanding art as a transformational tool is well established. However, I’m not aware of any programs like the Morinoues run, so specific and focused on building community through value-based motivation.

Thanks, Maureen.

Danielle, I couldn’t agree more! So many people pick art because it goes with the rest of their decor. I used to work in an art gallery and was constantly incensed when people refused to even look at reasonably priced up and coming talented artists if the paint wasn’t the colour of their sofa!
