On June 6th, 2009, ArtDaily.org ran a news item about an upcoming Family Fun Day at the Knoxville Museum of Art.
That’s in Tennessee – not a day trip for me.It got me thinking about smaller, municipally run galleries near Toronto. What are their programs and how are they promoted?
Knoxville has a population of 174,000 people; to compare, I choose Oakville, Ontario, a town of 161,500 people.
Why did Knoxville choose to release to ArtDaily.org or why did ArtDaily.org pick up the item? While there is wide exposure, it is not targeted to Knoxville. On the other hand, Oakville’s galleries have a few listings back in 2006 but nothing since. So the local works, but ArtDaily.org items can get you thinking about art across the world at a local level.
Here’s a program Oakville should put on ArtDaily.org. On July 26, 2009 for $10 you can take the ARTbus tour and experience the exhibitions through “artists and curators eyes”. The bus stops at the Blackwood Gallery at the Mississauga U of T campus and the Art Gallery of Mississauga.
The bonus here is the interpretation provided on the bus and at the galleries and the chance to hang out with other art enthusiasts in person.

FYI: What’s ArtDaily.org?
ArtDaily.org is a top art news stop on the Internet tha tags itself as The Finest Art Newspaper on the Net. Generally ArtDaily’s news items are listings and reviews of shows all over the world; about acquisitions and auctions; arts funding and gallery news. The paper is comprehensive, well-respected, long-standing (since 1996 on the Internet).
